Herald Square just south of Times Square is best known for Macy's flagship store, but it also has a Victoria Secret store in addition to Gap and many others. You can also buy under the shadow of the Empire State Building, which is a good plus.
The shops of Madison Square Park and especially Union Square just south of Madison are filled with great shopping. Eataly is just across from Flatiron Building, which is the place you have to go if you love cooking and Italian cuisine. Union Square has a great Barnes & Noble where you can read for hours and on the other side of the square there is a Whole Foods to do some shopping.
The southern part of Union Square is part of 14th Street , which is a street that runs from west to east in Lower Manhattan. On the west side 14th Street goes from the Meatpacking District where many shops emerge, while on the east side borders the East Village where you will find many independent stores.
